The Area

Lochgilphead is your ideal touring centre, situated on the shores of Loch Fyne at the geographical centre of Argyll. From here you can explore the enchanting Mull of Kintyre with its wonderful seascapes and charming villages such as Tarbert, Carradale, Machrihanish and the town of Campbeltown.

You can travel with or without your car to the Islands of Islay and Jura with their fascinating whisky trail, or Gigha (God's Island) and the beautiful Island of Arran with the beautiful Broddick Castle by Caledonian MacBrayne ferries. From Tarbert you can cross Loch Fyne to Portavadie on the Cowal Peninsula to visit Tighnabruaich and the Kyles of Bute.

To the West lies the fascinating Kilmartin Glen, centre of the Ancient Kingdom of Dalriada with its mysterious standing stones and pre-historic burial cairns, all explained at the award winning museum in the Village of Kilmartin itself. Cross "the Moss" of the Glen to visit the charming village of Crinan at the west end of the famous Crinan Canal with its "Para Handy" connections and boating activity.

Over the hill from Crinan you will find the village of Tayvallich on Loch Sween and nearby Carsaig with its stunning views of the Isle of Jura across the Sound.

Further to the north west on Loch Craignish you can visit the villages of Ardfern and Croabh Haven with their well established yacht centres. From here you can take a boat trip among the islands of Scarba, Lunga, Jura and Luing and even see the Gulf of Corrievreckan and its world famous whirlpool. Lots of wildlife to be seen too including wild deer, eagles, otters, seals and all manner of seabirds.

The town of Oban - Gateway to the Islands - is only half an hour by car from Ardfern and is the busy centre of West Highland life.

From Oban you can visit the enchanted Hebridean islands including Mull and the sacred Isle of Iona, Tiree, Coll and Colonsay perhaps spotting whales or dolphins on the way.

25 miles to the North East of Lochgilphead you will find the beautiful whitewashed town of Inveraray, with its Castle, seat of the Clan Campbell, its grizly ancient jail and floating maritime museum. On the way there you can visit the open air museum at the ancient settlement of Auchendrain and the fabulous woodland garden at Crarae with its stunning collection of rhododendrons and azaleas especially spectacular in springtime.
